White-Hat Actor Returns $268M Worth of Bitcoin to Liquid Federation
A white-hat actor linked to the Liquid Network security incident has returned approximately $268 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) to the Liquid Federation, leaving behind about 15% of the nearly 4,000 BTC involved.
The 3,400 BTC was withdrawn from the Liquid Federation wallet on September 6 and was later sent back after a series of on-chain messages between the actors and Blockstream.
The white-hat actor had initially asked for a security fix before returning the funds, which Blockstream confirmed had been completed. The return followed Blockstream's confirmation that the vulnerability had been patched, with the message 'Bridge nodes are patched, safe to return the funds' recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain at 09:19:46 UTC on September 7.
The actor retained about $47 million worth of BTC, approximately 598.5 BTC, which could potentially be a bounty reward, although no confirmation has been made by Liquid or Blockstream.
