Williams Sees Inflation Easing as Tariff Effects Fade
John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and FOMC voting member, expressed optimism about inflation in an interview with CNBC. He stated that recent data has been 'encouraging' and inflation is trending down as tariff effects recede.
The current inflation rate ranges from 2.75% to 3%, largely driven by supply-side shocks such as tariffs and the Middle East conflict. Williams noted that energy price increases have not significantly impacted service sector prices, with no 'second-round effects' observed.
He projected that inflation will return to the Fed's 2% target during 2027-2028, considering tariff-related pressures as transitory. The September FOMC meeting is crucial, with Williams cautioning against pre-committing to policy adjustments based on incoming data.
