Wintermute Secures Broker Dealer Status, Paving Way for Crypto-Traditional Market Integration
Wintermute USA LLC has obtained SEC and FINRA approval to trade stocks as a broker dealer, marking a significant milestone for the crypto market. This move allows Wintermute to expand its operations into traditional markets while maintaining its core business of providing liquidity across both crypto and equities.
The registration enables Wintermute to trade equities, equity options, and exchange-traded products tied to digital assets, as well as act as an authorized participant for crypto ETPs. This strategic move positions Wintermute at the intersection of crypto spot markets and regulated ETF markets, enabling it to arbitrage between the two from a single balance sheet.
Wintermute's CEO, Evgeny Gaevoy, stated that 'digital assets and traditional finance will continue to develop in parallel, intersect in new ways, and ultimately integrate more deeply.' This integration is expected to give market makers like Wintermute a structural advantage as the boundary between crypto and traditional markets blurs.
This development follows Crypto.com's acquisition of SEC-registered broker dealer Watchdog Capital in 2024 and Nasdaq's approval for tokenized share trading on its exchange. These moves indicate a strategic calculation by crypto native firms to acquire or build regulatory infrastructure needed to operate in traditional markets, rather than waiting for traditional firms to enter crypto.
