Wintermute Targets Traditional Markets with $1 Billion Trading Expansion
Wintermute, a prominent cryptocurrency trading firm, is embarking on a $1 billion expansion into traditional financial markets. The company aims to tap into equities, forex, and commodities through high-frequency trading systems, AI data centers, storage, networking, and computing capacity.
The expansion plans involve doubling its New York team, currently 17 people, and increasing global headcount by about 40% as operations expand. Wintermute expects traditional markets to generate over half of its revenue by the end of 2027, reducing dependence on crypto conditions.
The company will invest around $1 billion over five years in this expansion, primarily using retained earnings after staying profitable in 2025 and expecting profitability this year. This significant investment is intended to build high-performance infrastructure for competing with established low-latency market makers.
