Wintermute's $190M Short Bet: A Bearish Stance in Crypto Market
Wintermute, one of the largest cryptocurrency market makers, has significantly increased its short positions on the Hyperliquid derivatives platform. According to data from Onchain Lens, Wintermute's total short exposure now stands at $190.77 million, up from $146.19 million. This notable shift in trading strategy reflects a bearish stance across major cryptocurrencies, with particular emphasis on Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC).
The firm's largest short position is in ETH at $53.02 million, followed by BTC at $30.66 million. Wintermute also holds significant short positions in Solana (SOL), Hyperliquid's native token HYPE, and XRP.
Market makers often use derivatives to manage risk, but the scale of this move has drawn attention from traders and analysts monitoring on-chain activity. The increase in short positions suggests that Wintermute is positioning for potential price declines or hedging against existing inventory.
