Wisconsin Lawmakers Scrutinize Cryptocurrency Regulation Amid Senior Scam Losses
Wisconsin lawmakers are grappling with how to regulate the growing cryptocurrency industry as scams targeting senior citizens have resulted in significant losses. According to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, residents over 60 lost $46 million to cryptocurrency scams in 2025.
Robin Jacobs, an attorney with the department, described the cases as 'heartbreaking' and said that scammers prefer cryptocurrency because transactions are permanent, fast, and anonymous.
'The tools used to perpetrate scams are more sophisticated. They are more likely to involve cryptocurrency. They are more likely to be initiated through social media, and the amount of losses are vastly more significant,' Jacobs said.
Lawmakers are examining what regulations should be added to the state's law books as the industry grows. State Sen. Rob Stafsholt, chair of the Financial Institutions and Sporting Heritage Committee, expressed concern about unintended consequences of well-intentioned measures.
