Wisconsin Lawmakers Tackle Cryptocurrency Scams and Regulation
Wisconsin lawmakers gathered in Madison to discuss the growing issue of cryptocurrency scams. According to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, residents aged 60 and older have been disproportionately affected, with $46 million in losses in 2025 - three times more than any other age group.
The study committee heard from representatives of the DFI, who explained that scammers prefer cryptocurrencies because transactions are permanent and anonymous. They also highlighted the difficulties in holding operators accountable for facilitating transactions through their institutions.
Earlier this year, Wisconsin passed a law regulating crypto-related kiosks, but lawmakers are still debating whether more regulations are needed to protect consumers. The study committee will meet again in the fall to discuss possible recommendations.
