Wise Dropped Amid OCC Denial, Seeks GENIUS-Linked Stablecoin Charter
Wise, a fintech company, recently disclosed that its national trust bank application was denied by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The company plans to refile under the GENIUS Act stablecoin framework. This move comes as a surprise to investors, who saw shares drop about 10% on the day.
The OCC's denial was due in part to regulatory headwinds, including a Federal Reserve pause on master accounts for uninsured trust banks and prior AML/CFT issues noted by regulators. The GENIUS Act framework, on the other hand, would give national-level banking supervisors a formal lane to oversee dollar-token issuance.
If Wise can secure a GENIUS-aligned charter, it could provide a clean legal lane to issue a dollar token with bank-grade supervision. This would simplify compliance and provide clarity for counterparties who prefer working with bank-supervised issuers.
