Witsand Becomes First South African Town to Adopt Bitcoin En Masse
A small South African town called Witsand has become a pioneer in Bitcoin adoption. Located on the Garden Route, this coastal village with about 600 residents is home to 45 businesses that now accept Bitcoin for everyday transactions.
The initiative began slowly but gained momentum in 2023, growing from just three merchants to 45. A system designed to protect merchants from Bitcoin price volatility also offers Bitcoin-based loans, supporting the growth of a local financial ecosystem based on Bitcoin.
The grassroots effort is led by a local programmer and a restaurant owner who aim to create a financial system that benefits both residents and tourists visiting Witsand. Despite some initial concerns about change, the town stands out as an example of how Bitcoin can be adopted in small communities.
