Woman Loses Rs 1.72 Crore in Digital Arrest Scam Using Cryptocurrency
A 56-year-old woman from Perumbavoor in Kerala allegedly lost Rs 1.72 crore after being deceived by an unidentified person claiming to be an Indian Consulate official.
The scammer placed her under 'digital arrest' and induced her to transfer the money to a Bitcoin wallet on the Strike cryptocurrency application.
According to the FIR, the accused claimed that a transaction worth Rs 9 crore had been made through her son's account and told her that she needed to verify the funds to avoid arrest.
The scammer allegedly kept the victim under digital surveillance from July 8 to August 3, during which time they transferred US dollars held in other bank accounts to a new account and then moved it to the Strike wallet.
