Despite making strides in recent years, women are still underrepresented in podcasting. According to a landmark study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, only 22.3% of podcast hosts come from underrepresented groups.

The same study found that female hosts are outnumbered by roughly 2 to 1 across popular podcasts, with men dominating genres such as Business & Tech (92.3% male hosts), Sports & Fitness (81.1% male hosts), and Comedy (76.4% male hosts).

However, women have made significant inroads in the industry, particularly in true crime podcasts where they make up 53% of hosts.

The study also highlighted a technological divide, with more than three-fifths of all-male podcasts including video components, whereas only 46.7% of podcasts with at least one female host featured video.
