WonderFi Acquisition Shows Canada's Crypto Regulatory Burden

Canadian crypto regulations have been notoriously strict, and for WonderFi Technologies founder Karia Samaroo, that's exactly why his company was acquired by Robinhood. In a recent op-ed, Samaroo explained how years of navigating Canada's demanding and fragmented securities framework ultimately led to the deal.

The acquisition, which was completed on June 1, 2026, for C$250 million (roughly US$179 million), marks a significant milestone in Canadian crypto history. WonderFi, once Canada's largest crypto platform with over 300,000 funded customers and more than C$2 billion in client assets under custody, had previously consolidated operations from Bitbuy and Coinsquare into a single entity.

However, the regulatory environment proved too challenging for the company to sustain growth at scale. Samaroo cited the trust vacuum left by QuadrigaCX's collapse and the subsequent tightening of oversight as major contributors to WonderFi's decision to sell to Robinhood.
