Wood's Bet on Bitcoin vs Gold: Who Won the First Half?
Cathie Wood's prediction on February 2, 2026, that gold would 'ride for a fall' and Bitcoin would be the better investment has been put to the test. At the time, she recommended selling gold and buying Bitcoin, citing a chart showing gold divided by the M2 money supply had hit a record high.
Fast forward five months, and the market has delivered its verdict. When Wood made her call, gold was trading at around $2,800 per ounce, while Bitcoin was at approximately $73,000. Since then, gold has risen by 18% to around $3,300 per ounce, while Bitcoin has fallen by 12% to around $64,000.
According to Wood's own analysis, her call was not a short-term trade. Instead, she framed it as part of ARK Invest's broader 'great acceleration' thesis, which expects AI-driven capital expenditure to spill into blockchain and energy storage through converging S-curves. Her Bitcoin price target remains unchanged at $1.5 million by 2030.
Whether Wood's long-term case still stands is yet to be seen. The short-term scorecard may favour gold, but the verdict on Bitcoin's future performance will not be known for four years, when the predicted date of 2030 arrives. For now, investors are left to ponder whether they should have followed her advice and sold gold to buy Bitcoin.
