World Bank Sends $841M to Ukraine for Pension Payments Amid War
The World Bank is set to disburse $841 million to Ukraine to cover pension payments in the country's state budget. This funding, backed by a guarantee from the Government of Canada, comes as Ukraine faces its most challenging budgetary conditions since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
According to Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, this financial support is critical for maintaining basic social services while the country channels enormous resources toward defense. The $841 million is structured as reimbursement for pension expenditures already incurred by Ukraine's state budget, essentially backfilling a hole in the government's finances.
The Canadian guarantee reduces the credit risk that the World Bank assumes, making it easier to channel large sums to a country in the middle of a war. This arrangement sits within the broader Public Expenditures of Administrative Capacity Endurance initiative, or PEACE framework, which has mobilized $53.5 billion in financial aid to Ukraine across various sectors.
