World Cup Fuels Prediction Market Surge to Record $20 Billion
The recent 2026 FIFA World Cup has triggered a massive surge in prediction market trading volume. According to data from Chainalysis, transaction totals linked to the event reached $20 billion, including activity before and during the tournament.
This figure breaks down into $5.7 billion wagered during the five-week period when the World Cup was played, accounting for approximately 63% of total prediction market activity. Over 400,000 wallets participated in blockchain-based betting, with transactions confirmed on every continent except Antarctica.
The United States and China led trading volumes by country, followed by Canada, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Notably, less than 1% of wallets participating in World Cup prediction markets were linked to illicit actors, with funds flowing from sanctioned entities estimated at $5.4 million.
