Wrapped TON Tokens Stranded After Bridge Shutdown
The Wrapped TON token has been affected by the shutdown of the old TON bridge on September 1, 2026. The bridge at bridge-v3.ton.org is being retired permanently, leaving holders with a token that cannot be redeemed for its original value. As of September 1, 2026, 11,344,908.81 Wrapped TON tokens were still stuck on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
The shutdown of the bridge was announced on May 23, 2026, giving holders two weeks' notice to redeem their tokens before the deadline. However, despite the warning, only a small number of tokens were redeemed in the days leading up to the shutdown. In fact, only 74 redemptions covering 236,588.24 tokens were counted across Ethereum blocks 25,779,977 to 25,880,777.
The majority of the remaining balances, around 81.9%, sit on Ethereum, while 18.1% are held on BNB Smart Chain. The cost of redeeming Wrapped TON varies between the two networks, with Ethereum being more expensive than BNB Smart Chain. This has left many holders facing a significant financial burden to recover their original tokens.
