WSJ Slams Crypto Clarity Act: Loopholes and Risks Loom Large
The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board has expressed concerns about the Senate's proposed Clarity Act, urging lawmakers to revise it before its passage. The board acknowledged that the legislation would provide much-needed regulatory certainty for the cryptocurrency industry.
However, they noted that certain provisions in the bill could introduce new risks to the US financial system. Specifically, the editorial claimed that the bill creates a loophole allowing crypto exchanges to offer 'rewards' to stablecoin holders despite the GENIUS Act's prohibition on issuers paying interest.
The board also raised concerns over anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements. Exempting certain decentralized networks from these rules could create opportunities for illicit finance, they argued.
