x402 Protocol Surpasses 75 Million Transactions in Under Two Years
The x402 protocol has processed a staggering 75 million transactions since its launch, totaling around $24 million in volume. This milestone was reached in just over a year, with an average payment of about $0.30 per transaction.
The majority of these transactions were concentrated on two networks: Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 blockchain, and Solana. Both chains offer the low fees and fast confirmation times that micropayment economics demand.
The protocol repurposes a dusty corner of internet infrastructure to let software pay for things without human intervention. When an AI agent requests a resource from a server, the server can respond with a 402 status code and a payment demand.
The x402 protocol has grown well beyond a single company's control, transitioning to governance under the newly formed x402 Foundation in July 2026. This foundation is housed within the Linux Foundation and boasts over 40 participants from leading payments and cloud computing companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Adyen, AWS, and Google.
