Xi Jinping Brings Business Delegation to Washington Amid Diplomatic Efforts
Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to arrive in Washington on September 24 with a large delegation of corporate executives, marking his first visit to the US with such a contingent since 2015. This move is seen as a deliberate signal of Beijing's openness to US business at a time when both governments are looking to manufacture goodwill.
The last time Xi traveled to the US with a substantial group of Chinese business leaders was during President Barack Obama's administration, and a lot has changed since then. The trade friction between the two countries has been significant, making parading CEOs around the White House feel somewhat tone-deaf.
This time around, however, the calculation has changed. When President Donald Trump visited Beijing in May 2026, he arrived with his own roster of marquee American executives, including Tesla's Elon Musk and Apple's Tim Cook. Xi bringing his own business cohort to Washington is a return gesture, a kind of CEO diplomacy where the guest list itself is the message.
The September 24 meeting is broadly described as symbolic, with limited substantive outcomes expected. However, it does offer an opportunity to extend the one-year trade agreement the two countries reached in Busan in October 2025.
