XLS-68 Proposes Sponsored Fees for XRPL
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is proposing a change that could allow users to interact with it without first buying XRP. The proposed amendment, known as XLS-68, introduces sponsored fees and reserves, which would enable another account to cover the network costs associated with creating accounts, setting up trustlines, or paying transaction fees.
Under this new model, users would retain control of their wallets and private keys, while a sponsor assumes responsibility for eligible network expenses. This means that users could engage with approved assets without having to manage XRP for reserves or fees.
The system also provides features for platforms to sponsor reliable lines for specific assets, allowing users to receive and trade with approved tokens without first acquiring XRP to fund the related reserve. Sponsors can set which wallets, tokens, and actions qualify for sponsorship, and sponsored reserves can be reclaimed or transferred under specified lifecycle rules.
If a sponsor stops paying, transactions requiring sponsorship would be held until sufficient funds are available. Users could then either fund their account themselves or obtain another sponsor to continue using the service.
