XRP Blockchain Updates: Institutions Get New Tools to Harness Liquidity
The XRP Ledger is undergoing significant upgrades in 2026, aimed at transforming its future and making it more appealing to institutions. These updates include multi-purpose tokens (MPTs), permissioned domains and decentralized exchanges (DEXes), token escrow and smart escrows, single asset vaults and native lending, and confidential MPTs with zero-knowledge privacy.
The XRP Ledger already offers fast settlement, low costs, a native DEX, and auto-bridging. However, it has lacked certain features that institutions require, such as native lending and programmable settlement. The latest updates add these functions directly to the ledger as standardized primitives rather than unrestricted smart contracts.
One of the key upgrades is MPTs, which are XRPL's second-generation fungible token standard. MPTs can define maximum supply, transfer fees, authorization requirements, transferability, clawback permissions, and metadata. They have potential uses in stablecoins, tokenized deposits, bonds, fund shares, loyalty points, commodities, and regulated real-world assets.
Another significant upgrade is permissioned domains and DEXes, which create controlled trading environments inside the public XRP Ledger. Permissioned domains define which credentials grant access, while permissioned DEXs restrict trading to accounts that hold accepted credentials. This can be particularly useful for banks, stablecoin issuers, and asset managers who cannot trade anonymously against unknown counterparties.
The TokenEscrow amendment has also become active, allowing the XRP Ledger to place trust line tokens and eligible MPTs into escrow. This supports delayed payments, vesting schedules, settlement guarantees, milestone releases, and controlled asset distribution for stablecoins and tokenized securities.
