XRP Could Overtake Bitcoin in Market Cap, But Math Is Brutal
Ripple's XRP token has long been considered a potential challenger to Bitcoin's market dominance. Recently, former Ripple CTO David Schwartz stated that he believes XRP could eventually surpass BTC in market capitalization.
This scenario would require significant growth for the broader cryptocurrency market and XRP specifically. According to Schwartz, this wouldn't happen because of any decline in Bitcoin's value, but rather due to the XRP Ledger's functionality, adoption, and real-world usage driving its growth exponentially faster than BTC.
The current market capitalization of BTC stands at approximately $1.55 trillion, while XRP is around $87 billion. To reach parity with BTC, XRP would need to increase by a staggering 18-fold, reaching a market cap of around $1.55 trillion. However, Schwartz's scenario makes this hurdle even more daunting as he believes the entire crypto market could expand exponentially, causing BTC to continue appreciating in value.
