XRP Defies Escrow Release with Strong Price Action
Ripple's monthly escrow unlock has been a source of anxiety for traders and investors in the XRP community. For eight years, a billion tokens have been released into the market on the first day of every month, sparking fears of a dump. However, this time around, the release was met with indifference as the price continued to climb.
The billion-token release on September 1 landed in a market that had just posted its strongest August in five years. XRP had rallied by 28% in August, reaching $1.70 from $1.10 at the start of the month. This surge was driven by institutional buying, with spot ETF inflows reaching $153.55 million for the month.
The on-chain data showed a significant increase in active addresses and payment volume, indicating growing real-world usage of the XRP Ledger. The total value locked on the ledger rose from $32.31 million to $44.42 million in August, demonstrating increasing adoption.
Historically, the monthly escrow release has resulted in a modest supply entering the market, with 70-90% of tokens being re-escrowed by Ripple. This predictability has made the event less impactful on the price, as seen in the September 1 release.
