XRP Flash Crash Wipes Out $500 Million in Leveraged Positions
XRP suffered a brutal flash crash on August 22, plummeting by 37% in minutes due to $500 million worth of liquidated leveraged long positions. This collapse was not isolated as Bitcoin fell 2.5%, Ethereum dropped 5%, and Solana slid 11.5% during the same window.
The market-wide crash occurred just days after XRP rallied over 60% in a week, leaving traders exposed to significant losses. Analysts point to high leverage, thin weekend liquidity, and excessively bullish positioning as contributing factors.
Crypto analyst CW noted that 'high-leverage long positions held by retail investors have been liquidated' with no corresponding increase in short positions during the downturn.
The $1.35 billion in 24-hour crypto liquidations, mainly concentrated on Binance, underscores the volatility of the market. XRP quickly recovered part of its lost ground, climbing back to around $1.50 after the crash.
