XRP Ledger Aims for Quantum-Resistant Mainnet by 2028
The XRP Ledger is planning a major upgrade to achieve full quantum resistance by 2028. This ambitious target involves implementing hybrid cryptography, key rotation, emergency protections, and network audits. According to XRPL Foundation contributor Vet, this will put the XRP Ledger ahead of Ethereum's current target for comprehensive quantum resistance in December 2029.
The proposed changes include native key rotation, which would enable users to replace their cryptographic keys without changing their existing r-addresses. This could simplify the transition for both individual users and large-scale custodians, reducing operational complexity for exchanges, payment companies, and institutional custody providers.
The hybrid architecture will allow existing and quantum-resistant signatures to operate alongside one another during the 2027 testing phase. Testing can expose performance or compatibility problems before the proposed 2028 mainnet upgrade. An emergency mechanism referred to as the Quantum-Day protocol is also planned for a scenario in which advances in quantum computing occur more rapidly than anticipated.
XRPL and Algorand are taking different paths toward quantum security, with XRPL aiming for full quantum resistance across its core infrastructure. Ripple's strategy includes Project Eleven initiatives and a comprehensive security assessment before the final upgrade.
