XRP Ledger Beats Bitcoin in Quantum Computing Threat Test

A recent quantum vulnerability audit of the XRP Ledger has highlighted its built-in key rotation feature as a significant advantage over Bitcoin. According to the audit, only 0.03% of XRP's circulating supply is vulnerable to future quantum computing threats compared to an estimated 35% of BTC.

The audit found that roughly 300,000 XRP accounts holding 2.4 billion tokens have never sent a transaction and are therefore quantum-safe by default. However, two dormant whale accounts were identified as exposed, with a combined total of 21 million XRP. Those account holders may have lost access or simply stopped paying attention.

The XRPL's escrow time-lock mechanism is also seen as an added layer of defense against quantum threats. As Mayukha Vadari, staff software engineer at Ripple, explained, 'Time locks aren't hash based either, you just can't get in until that time has passed.'

By contrast, Bitcoin faces a structurally deeper problem due to its lack of native key rotation. A large share of early BTC was mined using the P2PK format, which reveals public keys directly in the transaction output, leaving an estimated 6.9 million BTC - nearly 35% of the circulating supply - vulnerable to quantum attacks.

Google's research on quantum computing has raised alarms about the potential risks to legacy blockchains like Bitcoin. The XRP Ledger's account-based model and optional key rotation feature give holders tools that Bitcoin's architecture does not currently provide, reflecting a fundamental design difference between the two networks.
