XRP Ledger Expansion Plan Sparks Debate Over Decentralization Risks
A proposal to increase the transaction memo limit on XRP Ledger (XRPL) has sparked controversy among blockchain enthusiasts. The plan, which would allow users to upload large files directly into the ledger, has been met with both excitement and criticism.
The proposed change would increase the memo limit from 1 KB to approximately 1.3 MB, enabling users to embed various types of content in XRPL transactions, including images, PDF documents, music tracks, short video clips, software source code, and compressed archives.
However, Matt Hamilton, a former developer relations director at Ripple, has expressed strong opposition to the idea, calling it 'a really bad idea.' He argued that the blockchain's architecture is not designed for storing large media files and that doing so would threaten the network's decentralization.
HAMILTON: 'Because every node has to store it forever. Really bad idea. Best use an actually storage network like Filecoin and have a way to link the two.'
