XRP Ledger Integrates Mastercard's Verifiable Intent for Seamless AI Payments
The XRP Ledger has taken another step towards increasing AI payments by implementing Mastercard's Verifiable Intent (VI) standard, adding to its already existing x402 Facilitator for XRP Ledger. This upgrade helps facilitate the processing of payments through the XRP Ledger using AI with authorization and verification of risks involved before transaction completion.
t54.ai announced on X that this is yet another step towards the emerging agentic economy that runs on the XRP Ledger, allowing autonomous AI agents to pay without needing any accounts. x402 Facilitator was deployed on the XRP Ledger in February 2026 and allows AI agents to purchase online digital goods and services through XRP and RLUSD without needing an API key or account.
The latest upgrade enables developers to add the Mastercard Verifiable Intent (VI) credential to the x402 payment, proving that the payment has been verified in three ways, who authorized the payment, spending cap, and what is being purchased. Each payment request is automatically scrutinized using the XRPL Facilitator's inbuilt risk engine, ensuring the transactions are properly authorized before being executed.
The XRP Ledger has surpassed 1.4 million agentic transactions, with J. Akinyele, Head of Engineering at RippleX, likening the current state of artificial intelligence payment infrastructure to the beginnings of cloud computing. He stated that eventually, AI agents will require payment systems that would function as seamlessly as the process they use currently for exchanging information over the network.
