XRP Ledger Lending Amendment Hits 71.4% Support Threshold
The XRP Ledger's proposed lending amendment has made significant progress towards activation, reaching 71.4% active support among validators.
The XLS-66d amendment aims to introduce native uncollateralized lending primitives to the XRPL, potentially adding a new DeFi feature to the ledger known for its payment and settlement capabilities.
However, the amendment still requires sustained validator support of 80% over a period of 14 days before activation. Despite the progress made, it is essential to note that the lending feature is not yet live on mainnet.
The XRP Ledger's unique identity as a fast and payment-oriented ledger has helped maintain its loyal user base, but DeFi development has often been less central to the XRPL story compared to other ecosystems. The addition of native lending primitives could shift this dynamic, providing developers with new tools and users with novel ways to interact with XRP and other ledger assets.
The uncollateralized lending mechanism is distinct from typical DeFi lending, which often relies on overcollateralization. This introduction requires careful consideration and management of risk, as repayment depends on complex factors such as credit systems, trust assumptions, identity, underwriting, and other risk controls.
