XRP Ledger Network Stabilizes After July Manifest Flood Attack
The XRP Ledger network has stabilized after the July manifest flood attack, according to new data from XRPL engineer and Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz. The telemetry data from his personal node shows that the performance of his private node is 'Rock Solid' and the network infrastructure seems to have bounced back after the initial attack.
The manifest flood attack occurred on July 31, when hackers sent thousands of counterfeit manifest certificates to the network infrastructure. This caused various connection issues for Schwartz's hub at the time, including 'onReadMessage' issues observed when nodes checked their ledger states. However, the attack did not affect the consensus of the XRP Ledger since it was not possible to prevent the creation of new ledgers.
In response to this attack, the XRP Ledger developers released the xrpld 3.2.1 hotfix that included changes to mitigate such attacks in the future. The limits have been set on the manifest size, and the caching of data from unknown participants has been altered to prevent suspicious connections from exploiting computer and network power resources.
