XRP Ledger Quantum Upgrades Face Uncertainty
An XRP Ledger contributor has proposed a hybrid post-quantum testing phase for 2027 and a mainnet transition to quantum-readiness in 2028. However, this proposal has yet to be confirmed by an official XRPL roadmap.
The existing secp256k1 and Ed25519 signatures used by the XRP Ledger are vulnerable to sufficiently capable quantum computers using Shor's algorithm. A built-in RegularKey mechanism allows users to change signing keys while retaining their public addresses, but this is not a complete solution for quantum migration.
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake expects Ethereum's three cryptographic layers to become post-quantum secure by 2029. The XRP Ledger would need validator support and network-specific engineering before implementing a digital-signature method to address vulnerabilities.
