XRP Ledger Seeks to Streamline Multi-Signature Transactions
A proposed upgrade to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) aims to modernize how multi-signature transactions are coordinated. The 'On-Chain Cosigner' proposal, submitted by Shawn Xie and others, would allow signers to collect approvals directly on the ledger, eliminating the need for external communication channels and centralized coordinators.
The current implementation of multi-signature transactions on XRPL still relies on an off-chain coordination process. A transaction must be created manually and distributed to each authorized signer, who then collects individual signatures through external channels such as email.
This creates what the proposal's authors describe as the 'last mile' problem, where the signing process can fail if the coordinator loses collected signatures or goes offline.
