XRP Rich List Reaches 8 Million Accounts, Top 1% Threshold in Flux

The XRP Ledger has quietly reached 8 million funded accounts this year in August. One of the numbers that gets mentioned whenever this milestone is brought up is the 'top 1% threshold' on the XRP rich list, which currently sits at 44,771 XRP.

This figure is often treated as a fixed target in crypto discussions, but it's not actually one. In fact, it changes every day due to various factors, so understanding how it moves is more useful than memorizing the number itself.

The XRP Ledger's structure makes rich-list math more tractable, but also easier to get wrong if you don't account for how the ledger stores value. Two mechanical details matter here: ranking must include escrow, not just spendable balance, and what counts as a 'funded account' changed in December 2024 when XRPL validators cut the base reserve from 10 XRP down to 1 XRP.

The threshold for the top 1% tier is computed based on the total number of accounts and their balances. As more new low-balance accounts are added, it mechanically pulls every percentile cutoff down even in a flat market, which is essentially dilution rather than distribution.
