XRPL Consensus Boosted by Simple Peer Connection Tweak
A recent study on the XRP Ledger has found that adding just two or three extra peer connections per participating node can significantly increase the number of nodes a targeted attack must remove to disrupt consensus.
The research, which was published in an arXiv paper on August 26, tested a random K-out augmentation strategy. This involves each participating node creating new undirected edges with other peers chosen uniformly at random.
According to the study, when just 60% of nodes participated and added two extra peer connections (K=2), the model's quorum critical attack size rose from 11% to 38%. In scenarios where an attack targeted the highest-degree nodes, the threshold increased from 12% to 33%.
The study's findings suggest that this simple tweak can triple XRP's defense against attacks. However, it is essential to note that the actual resilience of the network may differ from the modeled results, and further research is needed to confirm these findings.
