XRP's Ambitious Play for Global Payments Supremacy

Ripple's XRP has gained significant traction in recent years, particularly in select corridors and emerging markets. However, the question remains whether it can realistically disrupt global payments dominated by SWIFT.

SWIFT is not a payment processor or settlement network; rather, it's a messaging and compliance platform connecting over 11,500 institutions across 200 countries. It averages 53.3 million messages per day, with 44% being payment instructions.

The cooperative has an extensive compliance infrastructure, including a KYC Registry serving almost 6,000 financial institutions and over 60 central banks. Compliance Analytics covers more than 50% of all SWIFT traffic, providing sanctions screening, AML monitoring, and counterterrorism financing tools.

Ripple's XRP targets the settlement and liquidity infrastructure underneath SWIFT's messages. Its On-Demand Liquidity handled roughly $15 billion in 2024, approximately 0.01% of global cross-border flows. The most credible path for XRP is selective disruption in high-cost remittance corridors and emerging markets.
