XRP's Long Shot: Can Ripple's Token Overtake Bitcoin?
Ripple's XRP token has long been considered an unlikely candidate to surpass Bitcoin in market capitalization, but David Schwartz, former CTO of Ripple and architect of the XRP Ledger, recently stated that he believes it is possible for XRP to overtake BTC.
Schwartz emphasized that such a scenario would not arise due to Bitcoin's collapse, but rather because the entire crypto market expands exponentially. This would allow XRP to grow significantly faster than BTC due to its functionality, adoption, and real-world usage.
To put this into perspective, at current prices, BTC has a market capitalization of around $1.55 trillion, while XRP stands at approximately $87 billion, making the market leader about 18 times larger. If Bitcoin's valuation remains unchanged, XRP would need to surge to a staggering $24-$25 per token just to reach parity.
Schwartz noted that such an event may seem daunting, but he pointed out that XRP has come close in the past. In early 2018, its market cap had risen to $120 billion, making it worth almost 50% as much as BTC at the time. While this ratio has since decreased to around 5-6%, nothing is impossible.
