XRP's Quantum Shield Protects Against Threats Looming Over Bitcoin
XRP's design may shield it from quantum computing threats that could potentially expose Bitcoin to significant risks.
A recent quantum vulnerability audit of the XRP Ledger, conducted by a validator named Vet, found that only 0.03% of its circulating supply is considered vulnerable, compared to an estimated 35% of BTC's circulating supply.
The audit revealed that roughly 300,000 XRP accounts holding 2.4 billion tokens have never sent a transaction, making their public keys hidden from the network and thus quantum-safe by default.
However, two dormant whale accounts were identified as exposed, each holding around 10 million XRP and having last transacted at least five years ago without rotating their signing keys since.
The XRPL's built-in key rotation feature allows users to swap their signing key without moving funds, providing an additional layer of defense against quantum threats. Mayukha Vadari, a staff software engineer at Ripple, noted that the ledger's escrow time-lock mechanism also offers protection, stating 'Time locks aren't hash based either, you just can't get in until that time has passed.'
BTC faces a deeper problem due to its lack of native key rotation feature. To protect against quantum threats, users would need to move funds to a fresh address, which briefly exposes the old public key in the memory pool for around 10 minutes.
