XRP's Short-Term Gains Can't Bridge Long-Term Gap with Bitcoin
XRP has seen a significant surge in price over the past week, rising by 43 percent. However, when compared to Bitcoin, XRP still lags behind. The cryptocurrency started last week at around $0.978 and climbed to $1.70 before pulling back to around $1.43.
Despite the short-term gains, XRP's long-term performance is a different story. According to Decrypt, XRP has fallen 88.2 percent against Bitcoin over the same period.
Adam Livingston, a commentator with a pro-bitcoin stance, pointed out that XRP was still trading at $1.43, below its peak of $3.02 recorded on January 6, 2018. Bitcoin, on the other hand, has risen from around $17,000 to over $78,400.
The comparison highlights the opportunity-cost debate in the crypto market. Some argue that XRP may underperform Bitcoin even if it doesn't go to zero. Alexander Mason Alden noted that as the period lengthens in which Bitcoin compounds higher faster, the opportunity cost of holding other assets could increase.
