Yen Strength and Oil Surge Dampen Bitcoin's Momentum
Bitcoin's attempt to reach $80,000 on Wednesday was met with caution as the market digested escalating tensions over Iranian oil shipping and tighter liquidity conditions. The price of Bitcoin remained flat to slightly lower on the day.
The jump in crude oil prices added pressure on risk assets, with Brent climbing above $101 per barrel for the first time since late July and WTI trading above $96. This reinforced the macro mix investors often react to: geopolitical shocks, higher near-term inflation expectations, and tighter financial conditions.
The Japanese yen strengthened sharply, reaching its highest level against the dollar since February at around 153 per USD. The underlying concern is the yen carry trade, where positions that borrow yen and buy higher-yielding assets can become vulnerable if the yen strengthens. This has been complicated by speculation that Washington could limit Japan's selling of US Treasuries as part of future intervention operations.
Comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revived attention on possible additional yen intervention, potentially accelerating an unwind in leveraged positions. The Bank of Japan's next decision is also being closely watched, with expectations for a 0.25% rate hike on Sept. 28.
