Yen Strength Crushes Bitcoin's $80,000 Ambitions Amid Oil Price Surge
Bitcoin's attempt to retake $80,000 faltered as market risks intensified. The yen strengthened against the dollar, reaching its strongest level since February at around 153 per dollar, while international oil prices surged. West Texas Intermediate crude rose above $96 a barrel, and Brent climbed past $101, returning to triple digits for the first time since late July.
The US strike on Iranian oil tankers sent shockwaves through risk assets, causing selling pressure across the board. The unwind in yen carry trades has heightened risks, according to Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Bank. 'Further yen strength could turn gradual deleveraging into a much faster self-reinforcing liquidation,' she warned.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled the possibility of further intervention in the yen market. He noted that his informational asymmetry advantage allows him to make informed decisions on market interventions.
