Young Cryptocurrency Scammers Face Up to 14 Years in Prison
A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties stole over $240 million in cryptocurrency from a Washington D.C. resident in August 2024.
The scammers, led by 22-year-old Malone Lam, carried out a sophisticated 'social engineering' attack that duped the victim into giving them access to his Google Drive and revealing security codes, allowing them to siphon off over 4,100 Bitcoin.
Lam and his friends, including Veer Chetal and Jeandiel Serrano, used money laundering specialists to wash the stolen funds through multiple exchange platforms and convert virtual currency into government-issued cash.
The scammers' lavish spending quickly drew attention from authorities, with Lam using stolen cryptocurrency to buy a $2 million watch, over 30 cars, including custom Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris, and renting mansions in Miami and the Hamptons.
