Young Cryptocurrency Scammers' Wild Spending Spree Ends in Arrests

A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties carried out one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history, duping a Washington D.C. resident out of $240 million worth of Bitcoin.

The scammers, led by 22-year-old Malone Lam, used social engineering tactics to gain access to the victim's Google Drive and crypto wallet, allowing them to siphon off over 4,100 Bitcoin.

Prosecutors say the group had previously teamed up on other multimillion-dollar thefts since late 2023 using a similar playbook. However, this time they made a costly mistake: Veer Chetal failed to conceal his IP address when he created an account on a cryptocurrency exchange to hold nearly $30 million in stolen crypto.

The group went on a wild spending spree after the heist, purchasing fleets of sports cars, flying on private jets, hiring security guards, and renting mansions in Miami and the Hamptons. Lam spent over $569,000 in one evening at a Los Angeles night club, while Chetal gifted a Lamborghini to his parents and hid a duffel bag filled with $500,000 in cash in their laundry machine.
