Young Men's Wild Spending Spree Ends with Arrests Over $240 Million Bitcoin Heist
A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties pulled off one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in US history, duping a stranger out of over $240 million worth of Bitcoin. They used social engineering to steal the funds, manipulating the victim into giving them access to his Google Drive and revealing security codes that allowed them to siphon off 4,100 Bitcoins.
The scammers then embarked on a wild spending spree, purchasing fleets of sports cars, flying on private jets, hiring security guards, and renting mansions in Miami and the Hamptons. The alleged ringleader, Malone Lam, spent over $569,000 in one evening at a Los Angeles nightclub.
Their lavish lifestyle quickly drew attention from authorities, who arrested Lam and 17 others for their involvement in the scheme. The charges against them are an extreme example of an increasingly common form of cybercrime, with complaints of cryptocurrency investment fraud to the FBI rising by nearly 50% in 2025.
