A group of young cryptocurrency scammers stole over $240 million in Bitcoin from a wealthy investor in Washington in August 2024. The thieves, led by 22-year-old Malone Lam, posed as representatives of Google and Gemini to gain access to the victim's account. They then used social engineering tactics to transfer the funds.

The group spent lavishly on sports cars, private jets, mansions, nightclubs, and luxury watches. According to prosecutors, they spent around $4 million in Los Angeles nightclubs alone during a single month. Lam personally spent over $569,000 in one evening.

The FBI's investigation revealed that the thieves attempted to launder their gains through multiple exchanges, but ultimately failed when Veer Chetal, one of the co-conspirators, left a digital trail. His IP address was linked to a rented home in California costing $47,500 per month.
