Young Scammers' $240M Bitcoin Heist Ends with Arrests and Plea Agreements
One of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history occurred when a group of young men, aged late teens to early twenties, duped a Washington D.C. resident out of over $240 million worth of Bitcoin in August 2024.
The scammers used social engineering tactics to gain access to the victim's Google Drive and cryptocurrency wallet, allowing them to siphon off over 4,100 Bitcoin. The group, led by 22-year-old Malone Lam, spent lavishly on sports cars, private jets, security guards, and luxurious mansions in Miami and the Hamptons.
Lam, an eighth-grade dropout from Singapore, was arrested and has a plea agreement hearing set for Tuesday. His conviction would mark a significant victory for the government's investigation into cryptocurrency-related crimes.
