Youthful Scammers' $240 Million Bitcoin Heist Ends in Lavish Spending Spree
A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties pulled off one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history, duping a stranger out of $240 million worth of Bitcoin.
The scammers, including an alleged ringleader named Malone Lam, 22-year-old from Singapore, attempted to launder the proceeds through multiple exchange platforms and convert virtual currency into government-issued cash.
Lam and his friends spent lavishly on sports cars, private jets, security guards, mansions in Miami and the Hamptons, and nightclubs. Lam alone dropped over $569,000 at a Los Angeles nightclub one evening.
The spending spree lasted for about a month before FBI agents arrested Lam and 17 others on charges of social engineering and money laundering.
