A group of young men orchestrated one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history, stealing over $240 million worth of Bitcoin from a single victim in August 2024.

The scammers, led by Malone Lam, 22, used social engineering tactics to gain access to the victim's digital assets, then laundered the money through various exchange platforms and converted it into cash.

Lam and his friends spent lavishly on luxury items, including sports cars, private jets, rented mansions in Miami and the Hamptons, and security guards. Lam alone spent over $569,000 at a Los Angeles nightclub in one evening.

Multiple defendants have been charged or sentenced in connection with the heist, with Malone Lam being the 11th to plead guilty. U.S. Magistrate Alicia Valle described the scammers' actions as 'Ferris Bueller gone bad', referencing the iconic school-skipping character from the 1986 film.
