Youthful Thieves Spend Stolen Millions on Luxury Items in Cryptocurrency Heist
Multiple young men, allegedly led by Malone Lam, 22, orchestrated one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in US history. In August 2024, they duped a wealthy Bitcoin investor out of over $240 million. The scammers targeted 'Victim 7', who was at home when his phone rang with calls claiming to be from Google and Gemini crypto exchange. They deceived him into giving them access to his Google Drive and revealing security codes.
Lam and his friends laundered the stolen funds through various exchange platforms, converting virtual currency into government-issued money. The group spent lavishly on luxury items: Lam alone dropped over $569,000 at a Los Angeles nightclub in one evening. They also purchased fleets of sports cars, flew private jets, rented mansions, and hired security guards.
A private recording captured their reaction when they realized the extent of their haul. Veer Chetal was caught with nearly $37 million in stolen crypto at his apartment in Brunswick, New Jersey. Serrano initially denied involvement but later admitted to having about $20 million of Victim 7's stolen Bitcoin.
