Youthful Thieves Unravel $240M Bitcoin Heist Through Social Engineering
Multiple young men orchestrated one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts in US history, duping an individual out of over $240 million worth of Bitcoin. The heist occurred in August 2024 and involved a complex scheme to gain access to the victim's crypto wallet.
The scammers targeted 'Victim 7', a wealthy and long-time crypto investor, by posing as representatives from Google and Gemini. They deceived him into revealing security codes that allowed them to funnel over 4,100 Bitcoin, valued at $240 million.
Lam, the alleged ringleader, spent extravagantly on sports cars, private jets, and luxury mansions in Miami and the Hamptons. He also lavished tens of thousands of dollars on women in nightclubs, once spending over $569,000 in one evening.
