Zcash Breaks Eight-Year High as Price Surges Above $800
Zcash has surged above $800, breaking its January 2018 peak and reaching an eight-year high. The token's price increase is attributed to renewed demand, with market capitalization nearly hitting $13.43 billion. As of Saturday, ZEC was trading around $798.11, while daily gains were recorded at 24.07%.
The significant breakout comes after ZEC traded within a narrow range of $589-$851 in one day, resulting in volatility of almost 45%. The token's price also surpassed its previous intraday high of $750 set in November. Analysts note that Zcash shares similarities with Bitcoin due to its limited supply cap and proof-of-work mining.
Market activity played a crucial role in the price surge, with derivatives trading volume reaching $4.55 billion compared to spot trading volume of approximately $553 million. Open interest stood close to $1.35 billion, indicating large derivatives trading activity that can increase gains using leverage but also increases the risk of liquidations if the trend reverses.
The emergence of institutional ZEC interest is another factor contributing to the price increase. Grayscale filed an amendment on August 18 proposing to change its Zcash Trust into a spot exchange-traded fund on NYSE Arca under symbol ZCSH, pending SEC approval. The filing also revealed non-binding discussions between DCG International Investments and the potential purchase of approximately 200,000 ZEC via the trust, signaling institutional interest.
Zcash's longer-term case depends on network development, particularly Project Tachyon's roadmap targeting scaling shielded payments, improved wallet synchronization, and greater quantum readiness. However, researchers note that Zcash is not yet quantum-safe, making security and supply verification ongoing network considerations for users and investors today.
